This house had been home to a family with 14 kids. Lots of tiny rooms and yes, a MESS! We opened up the spaces by eliminating walls and enlarging the key living spaces and – you guessed it – opened it up to the back yard for a more contemporary lifestyle.
We worked with the constraint of the boring “block” that was the house, by playing with the windows and the finish materials. On the interior we made lemons out of lemonade with the metal structural posts that we found throughout the house. We incorporating them purposefully into the spaces, painted them black and added concrete colored smooth stucco and brick on select interior walls to create a somewhat industrial vibe.
